The National Center for Transgender Equality is the nation’s leading social justice advocacy organization winning life-saving change for transgender people.NCTE was founded in 2003 by transgender activists who recognized the urgent need for policy change to advance transgender equality. The Director of Communications is a member of the leadership team and will be the organization’s chief communications strategist, responsible for the successful strategy, design, and execution of a robust public relations and digital engagement program that educates the public about transgender people and positions NCTE as a leader on issues of national importance to transgender people. As part of their portfolio, the Director of Communications, in conjunction with the policy staff, leads NCTE’s communications content production. The Director of Communications must be comfortable coaching communications staff and interns.This position reports to the Executive Director and works collaboratively with staff across the organization.Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead a strategic communications program that advances NCTE’s robust legislative, policy, public education, and online fundraising priorities.
- Strategize and respond to constantly shifting daily events through digital and traditional media with (a lot of) humor and enthusiasm.
- Serve as a thought leader and strategist internally with staff or externally with community-based partners on campaigns and initiatives. Create and manage communications systems including NCTE’s communications calendar and department tracking processes.
- Lead communications efforts on behalf of the NCTE Action Fund.
- Provide strategic political and brand positioning guidance to NCTE senior staff.
- Supervise at least 4 Communications staff and manage NCTE’s Communications team projects.
- Cultivate strong relationships with journalists along with NCTE’s Communications team.
- Liaise with reporters along with NCTE’s Communications team on providing background, expert commentary, and other resources with and through NCTE’s spokespeople.
- Coordinate with LGBT movement partners, advocates, Congressional staff, and coalitions on communications efforts.
- Author, edit, and proofread content including fact sheets, press releases, advisories, op-eds, emails, blog posts, and other materials.
- Coach staff, partners, and community members on media interviews and digital content to ensure optimal preparedness and comfort.
- Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson as needed.
- Oversee communications consultants and vendor relationships.
- Submit weekly reports, monthly timesheets, and other administrative duties in a timely manner.
- Always On: Understanding and enthusiasm for working during non-business hours as part of the duties of a communications professional in the age of the 24-hour news cycle.
- Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience leading a communications program for a non-profit or political campaigns. One year of experience managing full-time staff.
- Track record of success: Successfully manage media for issue campaigns including identifying/coaching spokespeople, pitching reporters, and securing placements in national media outlets.
- Project Leadership: Experience in planning and executing initiatives within and across departments, and with consultants.
- Creativity and Innovation: Ability to leverage opportunities for growth.
- Self-direction: Takes initiative and ambitious in a small, unstructured environment.
- Communications: Skilled in creating and proofreading powerful, compelling written communications for advocacy and public education.
- Knowledge: Possess a refined sense of design for marketing and advocacy in print and online.
- Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work as integral part of a team of hard-working, energetic professionals, taking input from a variety of assertive colleagues.
- Prioritization and Detail Orientation: Ability to set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadline and in optimum quality.
- Commitment to Social Justice: An understanding of and commitment to issues affecting transgender people as well as an understanding of racism, classism and other systems of inter-connected oppressions is critical.
