Position Description: 

The Communications Director works to create and articulate the mission, goals andprogrammatic work of the New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) and the National Coalitionof Anti-Violence Program (NCAVP), which AVP coordinates, to all of our constituents, using avariety of communications strategies. The Communications Director serves as a member ofAVP’s senior management team (MTEAM). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Provide Visionary Leadership: Help lead and ensure strategic visioning for the Communications department. Shape and adapt AVP’s and NCAVP’s communications strategies to matchorganizational and community needs and current social and political climate. Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure coordination and cooperation. Participate in AVP’s staff led Anti-Oppression Process. General Communications and Rapid Incident Response: Ensure active and dynamic electronic and print communications including: website, blog,social media, community alerts, tool kits, brochures, reports, flyers, etc. Establish and maintain organization’s brand and style guidelines. Monitor all local and national news coverage of violence-related LGBTQ incidents,sharing relevant stories with staff daily. Manage communications in response to incidents of violence and homicides, as needed. Media and Public Relations: Maximize and expand opportunities for media coverage for AVP and NCAVP. Ensure AVP has diverse spokespersons (staff, clients, Board, volunteers and activists)who are prepared for a range of types of media coverage. Manage relationships with media and other contacts. Manage and maintain an archive of all media coverage Serve as backup agency spokesperson. Manage Communications Staff, Consultants, Volunteers, and Intern: Recruit, hire, supervise, support and evaluate Communications Associate. Recruit, hire and manage consultants, volunteers and interns. Provide staff leadership and support for Board-led Communications Committee to helpcarry out the strategic direction of AVP’s communications. Oversee Administrative Systems to ensure smooth and consistent operation of department: Develop and implement communication protocols, structures and records. Oversee the preparation and management of budgets and reports for the department. Ensure that Board of Directors understand the department’s work and impact throughreports and presentations and staffing board Communications committee. Maintain complete records of communications and track all data in a timely manner. 

Qualifications: 

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum three years of experience managing and working with diverse staff teams. Minimum five years of media relations and communications experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience developing writtenmaterials for multiple audiences and platforms required. Experience develop social media and marketing plans required. Knowledge of LGBTQ justice and issues required. Demonstrated commitment to end violence within and against LGBTQ and HIV-affectedcommunities and other marginalized communities preferred. Ability to work collectively and independently, a sense of humor and commitment to ahealthy work-life balance required. Experience integrating anti-racism, anti-oppression and intersectional values andprinciples into the daily practice of social justice work preferred. Experience working with direct service organizations and survivors of trauma preferred. Ability to build relationships, work well in diverse settings and with a myriad ofconstituencies and communities needed. Position requires significant night and weekend work. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
