Mission Statement: 

The National Center for Transgender Equality is a national social justice organization devoted to ending discrimination and violence against transgender people through education and advocacy on national issues of importance to transgender people.By empowering transgender people and our allies to educate and influence policymakers and others, NCTE facilitates a strong and clear voice for transgender equality in our nation's capital and around the country. 

Position Description: 
  • Work with NCTE’s policy team to establish a portfolio of work including two or more of the following areas: health care and insurance; employment; education; housing and homelessness; federal or state legislation; state administrative policies.
  • Track, analyze, and write policy recommendations and public comments on state and federal legislation, regulations, guidance documents, and other policies.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with congressional and federal agency staff to provide technical assistance and support policy advocacy.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with national partner organizations and actively participate in coalitions to advance NCTE’s policy goals.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with state and local advocate partners to provide legislative and policy analysis, draft policy language, talking points, and other technical assistance.
  • Develop and provide training and educational presentations for government, educational, and business organizations and for conferences around the country.
  • Work with NCTE’s communications team to produce publications, website and blog content, action alerts, op-eds, and similar materials, and to respond to press inquiries and interview requests.
  • Supervise NCTE interns and law fellows on policy tasks.

Qualifications: 
  • Familiarity with transgender communities: Strong understanding of the issues and needs of transgender people in the United States and familiarity with a spectrum of transgender communities including trans people of color and low or no-income trans people.
  • Experience in policy change: Experience advocating for and analyzing policies or legislation at the local, state, or federal level, with two years of experience preferred, which may include unpaid/volunteer work.
  • Project leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing projects, involving multiple people in various roles
  • Self-direction: Ability to take initiative and be self-sufficient in a small organization environment
  • Communications: Skilled in absorbing and communicating information effectively and to a variety of audiences, public speaking skills or experience a plus.
  • Understanding of racial and economic justice: An understanding of racial and economic justice and systems of inter-connected oppressions
  • Collaborative spirit: Ability to work as an integral part of a team of hard-working, assertive, and energetic professionals, giving and taking input with a variety of staff
  • Prioritization: Ability to independently set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadline
  • Time management: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, detail-oriented, including ability to manage multiple tasks independently
  • Language: Fluency in more than one language is desired but not required
  • Education level: A law degree is preferred but no specific degree is required.
Salary:
