JOB ANNOUNCEMENTDirector of Media Relations and Integrated Marketing (New York, NY)Posted November 18, 2013 Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, and provides training for aging providers and LGBT organizations, largely through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging. With offices in New York City, Washington, DC and Chicago, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 26 local SAGE affiliates in 19 states and the District of Columbia.Position Overview: SAGE is searching for a full-time Director of Media Relations and Integrated Marketing. The Director of Media Relations and Integrated Marketing reports to the Senior Director for Public Policy and Communications and will develop integrated media and marketing strategies that strengthen SAGE’s national branding and visibility, as well as its respected national programs, policy advocacy and development initiatives. The Director of Media Relations and Integrated Marketing will deliver against a strategic plan for the organization and conduct day-to-day work in the areas of media relations, new and online strategies, collateral development, writing and more. These responsibilities range from big-picture strategies to smaller implementation details.SAGE’s strategic communications has earned widespread acclaim and numerous awards, including the 2010 GLAAD Media Award in Advertising for Outstanding Social Marketing, two awards of distinction in 2012 from the International Academy of the Visual Arts, and a 2012 nomination for a GLAAD Amplifier Award for excellence in advertising and social marketing. SAGE’s online media reach more than 70,000 people per month, and growing. It’s an exciting opportunity to shape the national dialogue on LGBT aging through the country’s premiere nonprofit for LGBT older adults.Responsibilities include: but are not limited to

  • Develop, implement and monitor integrated, agency-wide, metric-driven marketing plans for the organization, including plans tied to the organization’s programs, services and policy advocacy, as well as its development goals.
  • Oversee communications with various local, regional and national media outlets, including cultivating and managing relationships with reporters, bloggers and editors; preparing regular press releases, blog posts, press kits, media events and briefing materials; monitoring media trends; and training SAGE staff, affiliate leaders and constituents to serve as spokespeople for the organization.
  • Lead the production of SAGE’s tri-annual magazine, SAGEMatters, SAGE’s monthly electronic newsletter, and other public education materials that support SAGE’s strategic plan. 
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy and integrated marketing campaign to increase brand visibility and online traffic, including working with the Online Media Manager to expand campaigns and daily activities on SAGE’s current social media platforms, and creating standards, policies and rules of engagement for social media.   
  • Manage SAGE's brand across departments to ensure continuity, and work with network of SAGE affiliates to implement brand requirements and templates.
  • Develop benchmarks and data tools to evaluate the reach and impact of SAGE’s media and marketing; and analyze and report these findings to maximize results.
  • Work closely with directors across SAGE, including development, programs, services and policy advocacy, to understand department-specific goals; and co-develop strategies that support SAGE’s overall marketing campaign.    
  • Facilitate communications across department teams through trainings, coordination and documentation to ensure solidified brand message.
  • Manage departmental projects including budgets, setting priorities and managing workflow, based both on internal and external deadlines
  • Help craft internal templates, guidelines and protocols for managing communications needs across departments.
  • Mentor, develop and supervise communications department staff, including the Online Media Manager. Manage vendors and interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:The candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in strategic communications, ideally in a nonprofit environment, including media relations, traditional and new media, and project management. Candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as skills related to copywriting, project management, social media strategy, negotiation and analysis. Candidate must also be creative, enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment with multiple tasks and responsibilities. The candidate must thrive as a leader and as a team player, across departments and among external stakeholders. Also, the candidate should have:

  • Demonstrated project management skills, including effectively managing collateral items from beginning to end- working with writers, consultants, graphic designers, web team, distribution vendors and budgets  
  • Excellent news sense and political savvy
  • Experience managing staff, interns and vendors
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize communications activities
  • Focus on delivering results under tight deadlines
  • Working knowledge of history and issues regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, specifically in regards to LGBT older adults, as well as a demonstrated capacity to continually learn concepts quickly and competently
  • Experience implementing and monitoring metrics of success to evaluate the impact and the effectiveness of SAGE's communications efforts
