Mission Statement: 

The mission of the New York City AIDS Memorial is to remember the more than 100,000 New Yorkers from all corners of the city who have died from AIDS; preserve the history of the caregivers, activists, and institutions that rose up and changed the trajectory of the epidemic; serve as a visual reminder that the AIDS crisis is not yet over; and inspire future generations to carry on the tradition of activism bequeathed to us by those whose lives and legacy we honor and celebrate. To achieve its mission, the NYC AIDS Memorial has committed to the growth of this energized organization, ensuring that the Memorial’s impact will be felt. The hire of a founding, full-time Executive Director marks the shift from a volunteer-led organization to an organization moving to the next phase of its evolution. Through partnerships with government, community-based organizations, and the art and entertainment world, the NYC AIDS Memorial has enormous opportunity to reach the public with its important message. 

Position Description: 

The Executive Director will be a visionary leader who will work with the Board of Directors to set the strategic direction and has ultimate responsibility for the fiscal and operational health of the organization. The Executive Director will be the sole staff member of the NYC AIDS Memorial and will partner closely with the active and engaged 16-member Board of Directors, chaired by Keith Fox. The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities will include:


Strategic and Visionary Leadership

  • Ensure that NYC AIDS Memorial has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress
  • Collaborate with the Board to refine and implement the strategic direction while ensuring that the budget and priorities are aligned with NYC AIDS Memorial core mission
  • Reach across the many New York City populations impacted by AIDS to ensure access to and engagement with the NYC AIDS Memorial

Resource Development and Fiscal/Operational Management

  • Hold ultimate responsibility for the fiscal management process of the organization, ensuring that the organization operates within budget guidelines
  • Lead fundraising from key foundations, corporate donors, and individuals through meaningful cultivation and stewardship for an annual goal of at least $250K
  • Navigate the government funding process to identify key grants and funding opportunities
  • Plan and manage special events
  • Oversee Memorial site maintenance, including working with City government and neighborhood partners; addressing issues at the Memorial site if they arise, and managing any other administrative matters

External Liaison and Thought Leadership

  • Represent NYC AIDS Memorial as an articulate, inspiring, and knowledgeable public spokesperson and ambassador with diverse audiences
  • Speak and write about the NYC AIDS Memorial mission; push the envelope in how people think about AIDS and its impact on a variety of communities
  • Recruit experts, funders, and colleagues to the NYC AIDS Memorial mission; develop and foster strategic relationships with high-level partners, including the media and other cultural, political, and entertainment influencers

Board Partnership

  • Support a strong and diverse Board that is highly engaged and leverages and secures resources
  • Collaborate with Board to assess opportunities and to execute on ideas
  • Provide the necessary information and guidance to the Board in order to assist it in making governance decisions
  • Work with Board and external consultants to assure NYC AIDS Memorial has sound risk management policies, accounting systems, human resources policies, and procedures

  • Commitment to and belief in the powerful mission of NYC AIDS Memorial which honors those impacted by AIDS and the AIDS activism movement
  • Adept at understanding and navigating conversations about the vast diversity of people impacted by AIDS and those seeking to learn more
  • Strategic and passionate leadership style, with the ability to establish new partnerships, maintain current relationships, and seek opportunities to promote NYC AIDS Memorial
  • Excellent communication skills, both in writing and speaking
  • Competence in fundraising with experience engaging donors around a key mission; a storyteller and strategic networker
  • Experience managing Board dynamics and developing inspirational relationships with stakeholders
The Executive Director salary will be between $80,000 and $120,000, based on experience level, with a generous benefits package.
