For nearly two decades, the Building Movement Project, a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE MissionWorks, has cultivated the potential for nonprofit organizations to effectively partner with movements for progressive social change. We learn by listening to groups and leaders about what it takes for organizations to align their social justice principles with their operating practices. Our research and practical resources help organizations innovate to meet the needs of the communities they serve and face the challenges of the external environment.BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;Service and Social Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to engage constituents in changing the systems that impact their lives;Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of nonprofit organizations in advancing movements for social change.
We are seeking a Senior Networking and Learning Associate who will take the lead role in building, catalyzing and strengthening the growing network of non-profit organizations and leaders who are current or potential participants in BMP’s communities of learning and practice. Joining our small core/national staff team and working closely with BMP’s Co-Directors, the Senior Associate will expand current—and develop new—opportunities to apply lessons from our research (on race and leadership, service and social change, and movement building) and our place-based projects (in Detroit and New Mexico) in organizational and community settings. This position may require periodic travel for conferences, trainings, and to work with BMP team members and other on-the-ground partners.Essential Job FunctionsLearning from and extending BMP’s current research and cohort-based projects, the Senior Associate will have the following primary responsibilities:Envision and implement (with BMP staff support) learning communities, peer support cohorts, and/or communities of practice that bring together a wide variety of stakeholders to deepen their engagement with BMP’s main areas of work (i.e. Race to Lead, Tools to Engage, etc.);Develop strategic models and easily replicable frameworks for adapting strategies for shared learning, based on lessons from BMP’s efforts in Detroit, New Mexico, and nationally;Generate workshops, trainings, webinars, tools, activities, discussion guides, and other resources that adapt and translate BMP’s data and research for use by/with practitioners;Identify cross-cutting issues surfaced by stakeholders engaged in BMP’s work, and engineer opportunities to collaborate with and learn from partner organizations;Contribute thought leadership and strategic insights to the development of future projects;Conceptualize and implement (in coordination with BMP’s research staff) strategies for collecting data on—and documenting the impact of—networking among stakeholders and participants involved in BMP’s work;Think creatively about opportunities for BMP to extend its reach, including but not limited to: speaking engagements, trainings, webinars, consulting projects, etc.;Build relationships with existing and potential funders, and explore the viability of developing a fee-for-service / revenue-generating consulting practice;Write reports, memos, articles and blogs to popularize and disseminate BMP’s research, ideas, lessons-learned, etc.;Organize and facilitate meetings and conferences.
The ideal candidate will meet the criteria below and have the following abilities:At least ten years of relevant work experience (advanced degrees may substitute for additional work experience);Strategic and visionary thinker with the ability to draw from many conversations with people from differing orientations and contexts, in order to: synthesize information, make meaning, notice patterns, unearth lessons, and identify cross-cutting themes;Ambitious and tenacious project manager with a track record of managing multiple projects concurrently and prioritizing work effectively, strong skills in conceptualizing ideas, creating plans for implementation, and the ability to carry out a strategy for impact;Relationship builder with the ability to hold the energy of a room, seize on emergent opportunities to delve into deeper relationships that transcend day to day tasks, strategically connect / match people to deepen relationships and learning, and build authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders;Consensus builder and organizer who can manage multi-racial / cross-racial teams, design processes that elevate / value insights from people’s lived experience, and move individuals to take collective action;Exceptional communicator with the ability to deliver compelling public presentations, facilitate impactful meetings, and write clearly and persuasively;Commitment to and experience working with social change/justice organizations;Collaborative personality who works well with others, and enjoys working as part of a small team;Willingness and ability to travel within the United States;Familiarity with content management systems, social network analysis, and mapping tools (like Kumu, UCINET, Gephi, etc.) is a plus;Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
